Lab Time

Extension activities for piano, keyboard and music theory lessons

ASK a Question

What is "Lab Time"?

Lab time is one way I try to extend the learning beyond the individual lesson. Parents might think of it like homework, but most assignments can be done in my studio before or after the lesson.

Tasks may involve using the computer, the digital keyboard, or a paper and pencil. Here are some examples of tasks students will do:

  • Complete a page in a workbook
  • Listen and respond to music I select
  • Play a musical computer game
  • Record  themselves playing a scale or song
  • Do a compositional activity

Length of lab time depends on the student’s age and experience, and can range from 5 to 20 minutes.

Note to Parents:

If you are on a tight schedule one day and unable to arrive early or pickup your child a few minutes late, it's not a problem! We can continue with lab time the following week, or the student can complete the assignment at home.

How it works:

  • Each week, I prepare an assignment that reinforces something being taught in the regular lesson
  • The student arrives 5 to 10 minutes before the scheduled lesson time to complete the task. Or, the student stays 5 to 10 minutes after the lesson to complete the task.
  • I provide feedback during lesson time and assign a new task.
